Why I Believe Heritage Deserves a Place in Everyday Fashion

It all started with a blazer.

Over the years, I had seen countless celebrities and fashion icons styling blazers crafted from Banarasi fabric. Every time one of those looks appeared on my screen, I found myself pausing for a second and thinking, “That’s beautiful. I could make that.”

And so, one day, I did.

What began as a creative experiment soon became one of the most loved pieces in my wardrobe. I first wore the blazer to a fashion show where I had designed a gown, and I wasn’t prepared for the reaction it received. People stopped me to ask about it. Conversations started around it. Compliments kept coming all evening. It was fascinating to watch how a familiar textile, when presented in a modern silhouette, could command so much attention.

But the real surprise came afterwards.

Unlike most statement pieces that spend their lives waiting in a wardrobe for the “right occasion,” this blazer kept finding reasons to be worn. I styled it for a Diwali celebration, then a family gathering, then a friend’s haldi ceremony. Every single time, it felt different. Every single time, it worked.

That’s when I realized something.

We often think of Indian textiles as occasion wear. We reserve them for weddings, festivals, and milestone celebrations. Somewhere along the way, we started believing that heritage fabrics belong only in traditional silhouettes and grand events.

But why?

Why can’t a Banarasi weave become a blazer? Why can’t brocade become a co-ord set? Why can’t centuries of craftsmanship find a place in the clothes we wear today?

The beauty of Indian textiles lies in their versatility. Their richness, texture, and craftsmanship have always been extraordinary. All they need is a fresh perspective.

What fascinated me most was how effortlessly this fusion worked. The moment traditional textiles met contemporary tailoring, something magical happened. The pieces felt familiar yet new, rooted yet modern. They carried the charm of heritage while fitting seamlessly into today’s lifestyle.

That blazer became more than just a garment. It became a reminder of the incredible potential our textile heritage holds when we allow it to evolve.

And that is where this journey truly began.

Since then, I have been exploring new ways to bring more of our traditional textile elements into contemporary fashion. Taking fabrics we have admired for generations and reimagining them into silhouettes that feel relevant, wearable, and exciting today.

There is so much beauty waiting to be rediscovered, and this is only the beginning.

I am incredibly excited about what’s ahead and the stories we get to tell through these fabrics.
